Prost, or in English just say Cheers

Yes friends….Germany does have Octoberfest, but NOLA has their own Oktoberfest at many of our brewpubs including Second Line and Urban South. The granddaddy of them all for the city takes place on the edge of Bayou St. John at the Deutsches Haus annual celebration which goes for three weekends in October.  The final weekend is approaching fast and since the weather has been perfect, this should be a big one.

The Haus prepares for Octoberfest for months since this is their main fundraiser for the year which keeps the organization running year-round for all of us visiting.  We actually think our bar tab helps keep them open, but that is pretty much a very arguable concept.

The Brats( a good name for these youngsters) are the featured band for opening and closing weekend and their set has grown into a wild collection of lighting and dancing as they have gotten more popular.   Our favorite song is the Hogan’s Hero March where attendees are divided into north, south, east and west groups and the band leader brings opposing sides together. As you raise your steins, the music gets faster and faster, and the movement pushes everyone together as beer spills all over everyone. Probably the reason that using ride share services is recommended when you leave this festival.

The festival changes from day to night since the young folks come out after dark and the yard turns into a Frat house, and the mature people pack up their chairs and head home.   The chicken is in full form throughout the festival as well and delights the youngsters and the more mature audience with the same fun.   Beer is plentiful with many, many, many tap handles and there are full bars for liquor if beer is not your fancy.  The main tent has full plates of German Food and at the far end, the pretzels and Bratwurst booth makes it easy to get a quick bite in.

If you are looking for some great fun under the moonlight, head to the Bayou and enjoy this wonderful fest.
